Tournament Overview
Typically, approximately 65 teams participate in the Annual VISA Rey Cup, including teams from Sweden, England, Scotland and USA. Scottish professional powerhouse Glasgow Rangers FC have participated in this tournament in the past adn it attracts high quality teams from all over the world. Reykjavik is the capital city of Iceland, and one of the cleanest and safest cities in Europe. Within a short drive are stunning waterfalls, geysers and Geothermal wonders, including the famous Blue Lagoon. Soccer in Iceland is very popular and the standard of play is fantastic, with many Icelandic pro players regularly playing for Europe’s top pro clubs. The Rey Cup ranks as a small Friendship Tournament for those teams looking for “something different” in a very unique country!
Tournament Format
Groups of 5-6 teams per pool but with a guaranteed minimum of four matches. The winners of each pool will qualify for the finals. Teams have the opportunity to register an unlimited amount of players, with substitutions in the form of roll-on, roll-off. The VISA-REY CUP follows the international practice of classification, which rules that each age group makes a team, i.e. all those who are born in 1990 play together as U14. VISA-REY CUP does however make an exception this year permitting teams to follow the icelandic classification, i.e. 13 and 14 year olds can play together and 15 and 16 together. The Tournament Committee deals individually with applications of teams which do not follow the KSI rules. Maximum 3 players from the previous year can play in any match. 2 x 25 minute matches unless otherwise decided and announced in advance. Half time is 5 minutes.
Tournament Facilities
2 stadiums including the National Stadium and 5 soccer fields, the Sports Hall, thermal pool with slides, steam-bath and jacuzzis. There are also several on-site restraurants, a Family Park and a Botanical Garden.
